Occupation. What’s your occupation? Feeling preoccupied? The Occupation Forces of Haines Junction, YT were less than shocking, less then awe, on October 22nd. But the place gets occupied in other ways, in the tourist season that is, there where it sits atop the White Pass rail line, catering to cruise passengers who arrive at Skagway, AK and looking to reconnoiter the rim. Then, this cluster of boarded up shacks must buzz with Texans, Californians, Germans and the like.
A century before, wannabe gold prospectors arrived and occupied by the thousands. Staking claims, all appetite for getting rich quick. Back then, no train, just the State obligation to pack ONE TONNE of goods over that pass. Swarmed in by the thousands, they did, became the 99%. How the West was Wild.
Meanwhile, down at West Georgia and Howe (a less inclement spot for a tent city) a showdown looms. And mosey’d past the week before I did, an obligatory click or two, then carried on, frankly uninspired and vaguely wondering why.
But say to me this: “cluster of boarded up shacks” and see my shutter finger twitch!
