So you’re in Chapters and you’re picking through the bargain bin kind of glancing sidelong at the woman with the funky hair who’s there across the aisle when your attention gets distracted by this thick little book – One Night on Broadway – documenting photographer Horst Hamann’s 12-hour photowalk in the Big Apple. And you think – hey, this is cool, these picks are totally uncontrived but still thoughtful. Composing with what’s available, rather than seeking out scenes that might be considered… well, nice.
Inspired to try a hand at this, you set out for a much more modest, 5-hour photowalk from downtown Vancouver, out along Hastings Street to Commercial, and back towards Main Street along Broadway.
In the spirit of lo-fi and no-frills and spontaneous and good enough, you throw a few words and phrases at each pic… but choice words, y’know? – the kind that we don’t use but they would stick with you the whole day if someone ever did.
ballyoo. formica. calamitous. bloodletting.
A bit cryptic, a bit loose. What did you do? You went for a walk. Did you have a nice walk?
Anyway try it if you haven’t! Even made my own little book, have a peek if you like.
