I have a tourist’s view of Ottawa, never having seen it in winter. Like a number of places I’ve only briefly visited in Canada. Halifax, Kingston, the Kootenays. I adore Canada for the seasons, just knowing that this place freezes over, those trees shiver, and these people curse and hurry and wish for the cold to end. I don’t need to see it myself. In fact maybe it’s better if I don’t. There are other places I only remember in winter. Saskatoon, La Malbaie, Sault Ste. Marie.
But Ottawa is place where I’m usually on “downtime”, watching the rest of humanity bustle and work.
Poking fun at statues.
Pedaling the canal, an impressionist tableaux. Resplendent in autumn.
So many tourists, from distant countries… what do they see in this place?
The thought of all this political culture, the lackeys and the yes men and the aides. An urbane, feudal theme park.
