in stitches

It’s called a rainforest for a reason – it’s slick and mucky and deliciously fecund. The water and wood fibre and soil and moss just meld together.

I’m a bit obsessive about tramping through these woods, especially around waterfalls. I know I’ll get soaked anyway, so rain doesn’t really deter me. I find myself clambering up slopes, wedging myself through moss-soaked tangle of forest using trees and roots for handholds.

You get familiar with water in a rainforest – what it does, how it carves an infinity of creases and rivulets down the slope through the woods. Slithering up, I find myself thinking of mudslides… for every standing tree, three more are piled beneath, becoming earth.

It’s coming down that can be tricky – that wondrous mass of rain-sodden goo can give away and lead to a nasty fall, as I learned today. A few stitches later, but still smiling and warm and happy.

Be warned – this last photo is a bit graphic…

  1. I think I now know where the phrase “face plant” came from 😉 But, you were still smiling when rendered for posterity. A couple of years ago I also fell in the woods here in Oregon. Stitches were reluctantly agreed to. The anesthetic injections hurt worse than the injury – but then, the inside of an urgent care facility was no distractive match for the wet chaotic grandeur of an Oregon coast forest. Best luck on a quick recovery.
