Some photos and random notes from a recent trip to Vancouver. One. A woman on the sky train, she’s angry with the airline because she left her phone in the departure lounge and they’re not being too helpful in getting it back to her, so she says. She’s had enough, she says, and there’s no bloody way she’s paying $7 to take the sky train downtown. Two. Staying at the YWCA hotel, a little budget-wise, so plenty of young travellers. Do […]
Experimenting with some clips taken a month ago at the carnival. Video “masking” and slo-motion and rubber duckies. And psychics. Have to start somewhere with the creative process I suppose. Music from warbly clarinet legend Acker Bilk: “Stranger on the Shore”, recorded from an old LP in my parents’ closet.
I’ve been in a bit of a rut lately on the photo side, feeling uninspired, the portfolio stagnating. So deal with it, cope. Took a short walk on a familiar circuit to see, or try to see, something I may have missed. A reminder that it’s not about taking photos, it’s about making them. Sometimes you just have to put it into low gear and trudge through. All taken with a Canon 5D II + Tokina 2.8/20-35mm lens and processed with VSCO’s […]
Some film shots from a trip to Vancouver some months ago. The phrase “Livable City” comes to mind, mostly because I’ve heard it often associated with Vancouver. Not a city boy myself, but I sometimes miss that sense of activity, that gradual expansiveness that helps a person feel small and anonymous. This lends itself to aimless wandering, an activity of immense and incalculable value. Surely there’s a word for that feeling? I’ll have to work on that. Any suggestions? Shot with […]
Whoa Nellie! This might be grumpy Monday, especially talking to parents, bosses, teachers, VIPs and police. Do not engage in an argument with any power types. Duly noted. Film rolls from the past months finally in. What of it? toronta. torrono? taranito…? TRAWNA Horizon S3 Pro camera | Kodak Gold 400 film
These photos will not change your life. Titillate me. Enlighten me. Blow my mind. Lately I’ve noticed an explosion of videos, photo series, “memes” and so forth on the web, all promising some perception-altering experience, should I click on the link. Maybe you’ve seen them, too. There’s an image to hook you. Maybe the blurry first frame of some compilation of cat videos, or the first of a series of photos documenting a tragic yet uplifting account of someone’s life […]
You’ve got to learn from the stuff that you don’t like so much. You’ve got to get them out there, share them. Advice from a friend on developing one’s art. You know, those photos that didn’t quite make it into the portfolio. After all, it’s here in the dregs, in the “meh…” pile, this is where the learning ought to be. Now, I’m fairly merciless when it comes to deleting the stuff that I deem crappy, but I have a […]
